We laid Karen to rest yesterday at the VA Memorial Cemetery at Ft. Indiantown Gap in Annville, PA. An Air Force Honor Guard travelled from Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland to provide Military Honors. The Honor Guard did an outstanding job, and the service was beautiful.
We held a viewing for Karen Monday night, and we were not surprised at the large number of people that visited to pay respect to Karen. I cannot imagine how many more people would have been there if all the people from around the world whose lives were touched by Karen could have been there too.
The past few weeks have been very difficult for all of us as we watched Karen battle her illness. Karen never gave up. She had a will to live that was stronger than anything I have ever seen, but it was not surprising to any of us that Karen fought as hard as she did, because for all of Karen’s life, she faced every situation with that same determination. To Karen, anything was possible.
Karen suffered in terrible pain for many weeks before she passed, but in spite of that, she was still worrying about others. That was what was most important to Karen. I know Karen is no longer in pain, and that she has moved on to a better place, but it is still hard to believe she is gone. We all keep saying this is just a bad dream and we will soon wake up to see Karen again.
I miss Karen terribly, and I will miss her for the rest of my life. There is a hole in my life where she belongs that can never be closed. I will always cherish my memories of Karen. I will rely on those memories, her determination, and her sheer will to live to guide me as I move on, but it will never be the same.
Karen, I know you are looking down on us now, and I know that you will watch over us. I hope that we honored you in a way that would make you proud. I hope that we did what you would have wanted us to do for you.
I Love You Karen
