Obituary for Karen Elizabeth Sakalidis

Karen Elizabeth (Dengler) Sakalidis, of West Lawn, PA, passed away at her Mother’s home on December 3, 2014. Born in North Miami, FL on January 11, 1960, she is the daughter of John R. Dengler, Jr. (deceased) and Nancy J. (Williams) Harding of Muhlenberg Twp., PA, and the step-daughter of Calvin E. Harding (deceased).
Karen attended Muhlenberg High School and graduated from Reading High School. Karen joined the U.S. Air Force in 1980, and served her country honorably for 20 years, retiring in 2000 as Master Sergeant. While in the Air Force, she served with the White House Communications Agency, and traveled with President George H.W. Bush. Karen was stationed at the U.S. Embassies in Bulgaria and Macedonia for the last ten years of her military service. She earned numerous medals and awards including the Defense Meritorious Service Medal with 2 Devices, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal with 1 Device, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with 5 Devices, National Defense Service Medal, and Air Force Overseas Long Tour Ribbon with 1 Device. Karen was also a NCO Professional Military Education Graduate. She was most recently employed as an Administrative Assistant at SuperValu in Denver, PA.
Karen is survived by three brothers, Keven E. Dengler, married to Esther (Vorhees) Dengler of Jacksonville, FL; Lawrence P. Dengler, married to Caie Mei (Huang) Dengler of Yulee, FL; and Leonard P. Dengler, married to Robin D. (Young) Dengler of Muhlenberg Twp., PA, a step-brother, Stephen Harding, married to Jennifer of Columbus, GA, and a step-sister, Michele Harding, with Tom Fries of Leesport, PA. Karen is also survived by 3 nieces, 4 nephews, 4 grand-nieces, and 5 grand-nephews.
A viewing will be held on Monday December 8, 2014 from 6 to 8 PM at the Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, 533 Walnut St., Denver, PA. Karen will be laid to rest with Military Honors at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Ft. Indiantown Gap in Annville, PA on Tuesday December 9, 2014 at 1:00 PM.
