I lived with Marty and Miriam Longenecker on weekends during one of my highschool years while my parents, Leon and Leona Oberholtzer, were in seminary. One evening I decided to contribute to the family meal with a batch of brownies. As I preceded to mix up the batter I realized I was missing an ingredient. The partial batter sat on the kitchen counter for two hours till I was able to add the necessary ingredient. I don't even remember what it was that apparently never mixed in well, but the delay caused the batter to remain in a very "mushy" state and the batter wouldn't rise properly even after baking a few minutes longer than needed. Well...... with all boys in the house........, Marty did his best to see to it that they showed some dignity and manners at the dinner table. Lots of snickering was going on as one by one we sampled the "tasty" dessert. I will never forget all the laughter as Marty turned to Mike and seeing his plate still full of the "mush" said, "aren't you going to eat it?" Which to that Mike replied, "I did!" I think Phil laughed the hardest and longest. And over the years, as I would cross paths with Phil, whenever we chatted he would always at some point with a huge Phil kind of grin ask, "Hey, make any brownies lately?" And, boy, he would still laugh. I think of Phil sometimes when I make brownies. Blessings and sympathy to the family. Sincerely, Audrey
