Jacob Calvin Wine, Jr., died March 12, 2017. J. C. was born September 11, 1914 near Meridian, Mississippi. He was the son of Jacob Calvin Wine, Sr. and Mary Ellen (Thornton) Wine, and the foster son of Reverend Edward and Bertha (Hoover) Culler. He grew to young adulthood near Oneonta, Blount County, Alabama. At the age of twelve he was baptized into the fellowship of the Easley Church of the Brethren, Alabama.

J. C. attended Bridgewater College, Bridgewater, Virginia, and received his Bachelor’s Degree from East Tennessee State College. He also held degrees from Bethany Seminary and Temple University. At eighteen years of age he was called to the ministry by his home congregation, and for the remainder of his life served the Church of the Brethren in a number of capacities.

In 1941, Jacob married E. Jean Weaver, of East Petersburg, Pennsylvania. They began married life by accepting pastoral leadership of the First Church of the Brethren, Johnson City, Tennessee. During World War II, J. C. and Jean served two Tennessee congregations simultaneously: First Church of the Brethren, Johnson City, and Jackson Park Church of the Brethren, Jonesboro. In addition, due to a wartime shortage of educators, both taught in the public school system. Later, J. C. assumed the position of District Representative for the Church of the Brethren in Tennessee and Alabama. In 1947 he was appointed associate superintendent and chaplain of the Tennessee State Boys Industrial School in Nashville, Tennessee.

In 1949, J. C. and Jean were called to the Church of the Brethren mission-field in Africa, serving as house-parents at Hillcrest School in Jos, Nigeria, for seven years. Upon returning to the states they settled in East Petersburg, Pennsylvania. While maintaining a ministerial position in various congregations, J. C. began an 18 year career teaching Psychology at Millersville State College (now University) and working independently as a clinical psychologist. Following retirement, J. C. filled interim pastorates in ten different Church of the Brethren congregations, serving three of them twice. In Pennsylvania, these churches were Hempfield, Elizabethtown, Ephrata, Pottstown, Mount Zion Road, West Green Tree, and Mohler Church of the Brethren. Other interim pastorates included Wilmington (Delaware), Walnut Grove (Virginia), and Sun Valley (Alabama).

Jean preceded him in death in 2006 after almost 64 years of marriage. He is survived by a daughter, Jeanine Wine (North Manchester, Indiana), a granddaughter, Natasha Wine Miller Bragg, a great-granddaughter, Coraline Mae Wine Miller Bragg, two great-grandsons, Mason Bragg and Carver Bragg (all of Indianapolis, Indiana), and a foster daughter, Phealay Thiak, and her children, Anna, Jacob, and Hannah (Charlotte, North Carolina). Preceding him in death is a sister, Ruby Wine Sheldon (Phoenix, Arizona), a half-sister, Helen Hall (Mobile, Alabama), a half-brother, Joseph Wine (Tunnelton, West Virginia), and a foster sister, Miriam Culler Phillips (Birmingham, Alabama).

A viewing will be held at Hempfield Church of the Brethren, 1186 Stevens St., Manheim, PA on Saturday, March 18 at 2:00 P.M. with a funeral and meal at 3:00 forward.
