I could not have asked for a kinder, more generous mother-in-law than Sophie Witkowski. I am grateful to her for many reasons, not the least of which is that she introduced me to the wondrerful world of pierogies.
That was twenty-six years ago. Since then, I've tasted other people's homemade pierogies, but none could compare to hers. I may be an artist at the easel, but Sophie Witkowski was an artist in the kitchen.
It's been said that, of all our five senses, it is our sense of smell that evokes the strongest memories and most powerful emotions. If true, then I like to believe that, when we--Sophie's family members--come to the end of our days here and cross over, we will be greeted by the heavenly aroma of friend onions in butter, and a smiling Mom Witkowski offering us a platter full of her homemade pierogies.
I'm putting in my order now, Mom, for a few extra cabbage.
God bless your gentle soul.
