My Dad

Twelve years ago, on Father's Day 2002 (June 16), I was asked to give a talk in our Church about the role of fathers. It was a special day for many reasons - it was Sharon's birthday, all of our children were present in Church with us that day, and I got to speak about my Dad. Here is a part of what I said that day about this special man: "My Dad routinely helped the less fortunate in our town - he never sought recognition and would have been embarrassed about it. He took a disabled friend to Lion's Club meetings every Wednesday night for years and was always there for that family even after that friend died at an early age. He was like a faithful home teacher long before I had even heard about that calling in life." "He taught me to work hard and be self reliant." "Yesterday (June 15, 2002), I called my Dad to wish him Happy Father's Day. Because I had forgotten to send him a card honoring the occasion, I offered to call twice to make up! He said make it three calls and we'll be even!" Today (2014), I've been a Dad for almost 40 years. These are the best years of my life. I had a great teacher about how to be a Dad. He wasn't perfect by any means, and neither am I. But in the things that count, there was no one better. Other than my dear wife and kids who have really made me who I am today, my Mom and Dad were two of the absolute most important people in my life. Now, they're both gone. But both live on in their kids's lives. I'm profoundly grateful to be my Dad's son. Thank you Dad - I love you. Bill
