Obituary for M. Rick Lied

M. Rick  Lied
M. Rick "Top Gun" Lied, 58, of Clay Township, entered into rest at his residence on Friday, December 4, 2009.

Born in Akron, he was the son of the late Melvin E. and Thelma J. (Witmer) Lied and was the husband of Kelly Jo (McNeill) Lied.

Rick was selected by his teammates Mr. Mount for the Class of 1969 Ephrata High Football Team. After graduation, Rick was accepted to try out for the New York Jets and the Pittsburgh Pirates, but he chose to enlist in the US Air Force headed to Vietnam to serve his country. He served in Vietnam from 1970 - 1971.

Rick enjoyed Harley motorcycle riding, wood working, and always sitting by the fire. Rick always thought of others before himself. He was a life member of the Lititz Post #1463 VFW, a member of the Ephrata Amvets Post #136 and a past president of the Ephrata Area Vietnam Vets.

He worked for New Holland Concrete from 1985 to 2000 and at Lester Summers Trucking from 2000 to 2002 retiring in 2002 due to medical disability.

In addition to his wife, Rick is survived by two daughters: Patti M., wife of Seth Frymyer of Ephrata; and Tabbi M. Witmyer, significant other of David Jones, of Ephrata; a brother: Jeffrey E., husband of Deb (Hemming) Lied of Akron; a sister: Donna L., wife of Thomas Stiefvater of Ephrata, a granddaughter, Mariah L. Jones, and granddaughter Madison due in February. He is also survived by 9 nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held at Stradling Funeral Home, 201 Church Ave., Ephrata, from 6 to 8 PM on Wednesday, December 9 and also from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM Thursday, December 10. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 PM on Thursday at the funeral home with Pastor Joel Hainley officiating. Interment will be in the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery with military honors.

Memorial contributions in Rick's memory may be sent to the Lebanon VA Medical Center, 1700 south Lincoln Ave., Lebanon, PA 17042. Arrangements by Stradling Funeral Homes, Akron/Ephrata.
