Obituary for Phyllis Schmook

Phyllis Schmook
Phyllis M. Schmook, 87 years old of Ephrata, Pa passed away at Maple Farm Nursing Center in Akron, PA on Friday the 1st of September surrounded by her family.

Born in Manheim, PA, October 8, 1929, Phyl was the daughter of late Harry and Elva Matthews Miller and sister to the late Richard Miller and Carolyn Shelly. Her late husband, Fred Schmook, passed away in 1992 after enjoying 41 years of marriage.

Phyl graduated from the Lititz High School in 1947 and went on to graduate from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1950. She worked as a Registered Nurse for over 40 years and retired from Ephrata Community Hospital at the age of 65, after working there for over 30 years as an Operating Room Supervisor. People always said they loved seeing her in the OR when they went in for surgery, because they automatically felt they would be alright under her care. She was a hard worker and instilled this trait in her daughters and grandchildren. She was a member of OMPH, in Ephrata where she was a member of the Legion of Mary. Phyl loved spending time with her family and friends, doing her daily crossword puzzles, volunteering, shopping, and spending time with her many cats, including Mae Ling, Cleo, Pumpkin and most recently, Moses. She and Fred loved to entertain in their home on Parkview Heights Road in Ephrata; their family room was a gathering spot for many good times.

Phyl wants to be remembered for “just being myself, good or bad”. Her fondest memories were holding her children in her arms for the first time, followed by holding her grandchildren many years later.

Phyl is “Mom” to Becky, wife of Michael Weber of Ephrata, PA, Georgia Schmook of Lititz, PA, and Julie Potteiger of Gainesville, GA. She is “Grammy” to five grandchildren, Sarah wife of Robby Lowry of Gainesville, GA, Zachary Schmook of Reston, VA, Noah Potteiger husband of Alicia of Etters, PA, Liz Russell fiancée of Christian Waltman of Lititz, PA, and Annie Russell of Lititz, PA. She was also Great-Grammy to Robby Lowry, III born on July 15, 2017

The family would like to thank the staff of the Brossman House at Maple Farm and to the team at Hospice and Community Care for taking the very best care possible of Mom. Also, to Barbara and Chris for all their visits, prayers and support.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held October 13, 2017 at Our Mother of Perpetual Help, 320 Church Avenue, Ephrata, PA 17522. Final commendation and farewell will be private and at the convenience of the family.
