Obituary for Kenneth G. Sweitzer

Kenneth G. Sweitzer
Kenneth Grant Sweitzer, 72, of Denver, formerly of Bowmansville, PA, lost his courageous battle with cancer on Friday, July 17, 2015 at the Denver Health and Rehabilitation Center, Denver, PA.

He was born in West Reading, PA, son of Melvin V. and Edith M. (Lied) Sweitzer of Bowmansville, PA. He was also the loving and devoted husband of Kathryn E. (Boyer) Sweitzer, with whom he celebrated 50 years of marriage on June 5 of this year.

Kenneth was a loving and devoted son, husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather. He cherished his family, and is survived by daughters Cynthia Kay, wife of Randall J. Zimmerman of Denver, and Wendolen Rae, wife of Michael R. Mellinger of Reinholds, and grandsons Grant Richard and Alex Michael. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an older brother, Richard Eugene Sweitzer.

Kenneth was a member of Swamp Christian Fellowship church, where formerly he attended Sunday school, served as a deacon, was a consistory member, and was on the church bowling team. Previously during his growing up years, Kenneth had been a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and Sunday school in Bowmansville, PA.

Ken was a graduate of Garden Spot High School and continued his education at Penn State Berks Campus, where he received an Associate Degree in Drafting and Mechanical Engineering. Ken began his working career at Sweitzer’s Cabinet Shop, followed by several years of employment at Bollman Hat Factory. The remainder of his working career was spent at the former Sperry New Holland as a maintenance mechanic, from which he retired after 34 years of employment.

In addition to his working career, Ken dedicated himself to serving his community. He joined the East Cocalico Township Planning Commission in 1983, and was recently recognized for 32 years of service to the commission, and also for serving as a fire policeman with the Reamstown Fire Company. Formerly, he had served as a fire fighter and as treasurer for the Adamstown Fire Company. He was a founding organizer, coach, and president of the Conestoga Girls Softball League, coaching for 11 years.

Kenneth enjoyed watching the Phillies, Eagles, Flyers, NASCAR, playing bingo and doing puzzles, and collecting toy trains. Since childhood, he was an avid bowler, having won many trophies and awards. He bowled at Colonial Hills, and on the Penn State Bowling Team.

He also enjoyed taking his family to the shore, and also enjoyed deer hunting in Maine. He loved to share his love of NASCAR, model trains, sports, and woodworking with his grandsons and was eager to assist with any school or club projects. He also loved animals.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2015 from 9 am to 10 am in the multi-purpose building of the Swamp Christian Fellowship Church, 390 Swamp Church Road, Reinholds, PA, followed by the funeral service at 10 am, with the Reverend Craig Snow officiating. Interment will take place in Pleasant View Cemetery, Sinking Spring, PA.

Kindly omit flowers. Memorial contributions in Kenneth’s memory may be made to Swamp Christian Fellowship Church, 390 Swamp Church Road, Reinholds, PA, 17569, or to Reamstown Fire Company, 12 West Church Street, Reamstown, PA 17567.
