Obituary for Warren N. Leatherman

Warren N.  Leatherman
Warren N. Leatherman, of Landis Homes, formerly of Akron, quietly passed away early Friday morning, April 3, at age 93, following a short illness. He was a devoted husband for 63 years with his wife Louise passing in 2007.

His parents were Arthur and Barbara (Nyce) Leatherman, of Doylestown, PA. He graduated from Doylestown High School and Goshen College, Goshen, IN with an economic major and music minor in 1943. Warren entered alternative service as a conscientious objector and served in Grottoes, VA. He was also a regional director for men serving alternative service in mental health hospitals stationed in Providence, RI.

Warren showed humor and a love of life in all he did. He enjoyed sales and was the manager and owner of Warren’s Shoes, Ephrata for 40 years until his retirement in 1986. He had a love of music and was a choir director for various choirs since college. Warren was a charter member of Akron Mennonite Church and lived his faith daily. He was an avid gardener, loved the outdoors, a birder and lover of animals and sports. In his retirement years, he enjoyed volunteering with Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA), Tabor Community Service and Hospice of Lancaster County.

He will be greatly missed by his three children, J. Philip Leatherman (Rita Knoble) of Cincinnati, OH, Bonnie Gingrich (Lynn) of Iowa City, IA and Joanne Leatherman (Steve Dalbor) of Lancaster; 5 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by four siblings, Paul of Lititz, PA, David of Goshen, IN, Harold of Portland, OR and Ethel Rush of Souderton and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held on Monday, April 6, from 6 to 8 pm, at the Akron Mennonite Church, 1311 Diamond St., Akron. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 7, at 11 am, at the church, with Pastors Jim S. Amstutz and A. Richard Weaver officiating. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family in the Akron Mennonite Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Warren's memory may be made to Akron Mennonite Church, College Fund, 1311 Diamond St., Akron, PA 17501.
