Richard Roland Houser, 82, of Akron, passed away on Friday, January 16, 2015, at his home.
He was born in Ephrata to the late Roland Rollman and Pauline (Thatcher) Houser and was the husband of Jane Dorothy (Shreiner) Houser, whom he married November 23, 1953, sharing 61 years of marriage.
He was a life member of the RothsvilleV.F.C., member and past president of the Akron V.F.C., and a fire policeman for Akron, Rothsville and W. Earl Twp. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing while staying in cabins in Potter and Tioga Counties. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grand children and great-grandchildren.
Richard worked as a mechanic for EMM Sales and Service, retiring in 2009 after 40 years of service. In the earlier years, he was employed at the Miller Hess Shoe Co. in Akron, Farm Hand in Willow Street, and the Daffin Co. in Lancaster.
In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by three sons, Jeffrey Houser of Kinzers, Barry Houser of Manheim, and Jim, husband of Susan (Mentzer) Houser of Akron; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Patsy Whirt of Ephrata.
He was preceded in death by a son, Dennis Houser who died in 1954, a brother, Harold Houser, and a sister, Betty Lou Cammauf.
A viewing will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2015, from 6 to 8 pm at the Akron Church of the Brethren, 613 Main Street, Akron. An additional viewing will he held on Thursday from 9 to 10 am at the Akron Church of the Brethren, followed by funeral services at 10 am, with Pastor Tom Weber officiating.
Interment will take place in the Millport Union Cemetery.
