Obituary for Clair R. Hurst

Clair Royer Hurst, 91, formerly of Akron and Brethren Village, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2014 at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy.

Born on July 19, 1923 in Ephrata to the late Martin and Elnora (Royer) Hurst, Clair was the loving husband of 62 ½ years of marriage to Anna Mary (Patrick) Hurst, who passed away October 29, 2013.

A graduate of Ephrata High School’s Class of 1941, Clair was subsequently employed at Warren’s Shoes in Ephrata, and later J.W. Peach’s and Company Fine Family Footwear in Brownstown. During World War II, he worked in civilian public service.


A lifelong member of the Ephrata Church of the Brethren (Ephrata), Clair served as a deacon and treasurer for many years. He enjoyed traveling, spending time with family, and gardening, especially tending his flower gardens at home in Akron.

Clair is survived by two sons, Michael, of Ephrata, and Bryan, of Manheim.

Michael Hurst is married to Gwen. They have three children, Kelsey, Kaitlyn (both at home), and Ramona, who is married to Brent Martin. Ramona and Brent reside in Reamstown with their daughter Alexis.

Bryan Hurst is married to Joyce. They have three children, Meredith, Austin (both at home), and Erika, who is married to Ashley Martin. Erika and Ashley reside in Penryn, with their son Hunter.

Also surviving is one brother, Cletus and his wife Faye. In addition Clair is survived by four sisters-in-law, Virginia Patrick (Hershey), Sarah Nealy (Newville), Dorothy Seibert (Hummelstown), Eleanor and husband Harvey (Harrisburg). He was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl and Wilmer.

A viewing will be held on Monday, August 18, from 6 to 8 pm at the Ephrata Church of the Brethren, 201 Crescent Avenue, Ephrata, as well as Tuesday, August 19, from 9 to 10 am, immediately prior to the 10 am service at the Church, with Pastor Rob Eshelman officiating. Interment will take place in the Middle Creek Brethren Cemetery.
