James K. Hornberger, 73, formerly of Ephrata, passed away on Friday, May 17, 2013, at Luther Acres, Lititz.

He was born in Reamstown to the late Ralph and Violet (Warner) Hornberger and was the husband of Thelma Mae (Sheaffer) Hornberger, with whom he shared 46 years of marriage.

He was a member of Hope United Methodist Church, Ephrata. A member of the 1958 graduation class of Ephrata High School, James worked at Sperry New Holland NA, until his retirement after 33 years in 1996, and then he worked as a custodian for the Ephrata School District until 2002. He was also member of Lincoln Seniors, Friendly Circle, Cloister Post #429 American Legion, and a life member of both the Ephrata Amvets Post #136 and the Cocalico Post #3376 V.F.W. A sports card dealer, he also enjoyed golfing, watching sports on television, wintering in Florida and going to the mountains.

Mr. Hornberger had served in the US Navy, during the Cuban Missile Crisis on the USS Waller.

In addition to his wife, James is survived by a daughter, Lisa, wife of Shawn McEllhenney of Ephrata; two step sons, Donald Fox of Akron and James Fox of Lancaster; three step daughters, Susan, wife of Randy Buck of Denver; Carol, wife of Paul Reiner of Apollo; and Linda, wife of Dennis Martin of Ephrata; a sister, Joanne, wife of Ray Will of Tallahassee, FL; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence Hornberger.

A viewing will be held on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Stradling Funeral Home, 201 Church Ave., Ephrata. An additional viewing will be held at the Hope United Methodist Church, 3474 Rothsville Road, Ephrata on Wednesday from 9:00 am to 10:00 am, followed by funeral services at 10:00 am with Rev. James L. Garner, Jr. and Rev. Paul Reiner officiating. Interment will take place in the Muddy Creek Cemetery. Military honors accorded by the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard.
