Obituary for Samuel B. Iseman Jr.

Samuel “Sam” Bernard Iseman Jr., 87, of Ephrata, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on November 6, 2023, with his loving wife and family by his side.

Sam was born on September 11,1936, in Washington D.C. to the late Samuel B. Iseman Sr. and Almyrta “Tommie” Thomas.

Sam spent his early childhood years living in the Abbot hotel in Washington D.C. where his father was the manager. He enjoyed setting up lemonade stands for the staff and playing in the elevator.

His family later moved to Long Island, New York where he graduated from Freeport High School. He went on to receive a Master’s Degree in mathematics and secondary education (he was one course shy of earning his Doctorate Degree!) from Adelphi University.

When Sam’s family moved to Long Island, New York, they moved across the street from Dean Street Chapel, this is where Sam would come to accept Jesus as his Savior. It was also where he would meet the love of his life, Pieternella (Nell) Alexander from Amsterdam, Netherlands. They married on June 10, 1960. They were married for 63 years.

Sam served in the Army Reserves. Upon return from honeymoon, Sam received papers to report to Fort Dix for service.

Sam had an amazing mind for math. He used this gift working as an educator. He taught mathematics at Farmingdale High School for 32 years. Sam was also an adjunct math professor at Farmingdale State College in Long Island, NY. Upon retirement, he taught high school math at South Shore Christian School in Levittown, NY for several years. Sam also owned Nick’s Bike Shop in North Bellmore, NY where he worked alongside his sons.

Sam was a man of many talents! He was a skilled carpenter. He enjoyed building furniture and gifts for his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was also actively involved in serving at Dean Street Chapel in Freeport, NY for many years. After relocating to Pennsylvania, he attended and served at Monterey Bible Chapel in Leola.

Sam is survived by his beloved wife, Nell; six children, Scott (MaryAnne), Bruce (Bernadeth), Steven (Margaret), Tim (Janet), Susan (Ed), Patti (Erik); 17 grandchildren, Scott, Luke (Morgan), Kerrie Anne (Phil), Kaitlin, Nathan, Jonathan (Jessica), Thomas, Kiersten, Steven, Matthew, Sarah, Paul, Allie, Kate, Abigail, Lucy, Sam; 9 great-grandchildren, with one more on the way and many dear friends.

Sam was a devoted husband and father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He faithfully prayed for each child, grandchild, and great-grandchild by name.

He will be remembered for his unconditional love, incredible generosity, and sense of humor. While words cannot express how much he is missed, we are comforted knowing that we have the hope of seeing him again.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave His only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16
