Obituary for John G. Matthews

John G. Matthews, 92, of Ephrata, passed away on Friday, October 8, 2021, at Spruce Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation.

He was born in Heidelberg Township to the late John H. and Nora (Gockley) Matthews and was the husband of the late Pauline L. Matthews whom he shared 73 years of marriage before she passed away September 17, 2021.

He was a member of Faith United Evangelical Lutheran Church.

John was a self-employed Auto Detailer for 30 years. Previously he was a controller for Holsom, Miers and Manbeck bakeries for 20 years. For a short time he delivered milk for Cloister Dairies and worked for Stoltzfus Quarry. John was a member of Cocalico Valley Post #3376 V.F.W., and a former driver for the Ephrata Ambulance Association. He enjoyed classic cars and trucks, especially collecting scale models. He also enjoyed visiting Wildwood, NJ, beaches.

John is survived by two children, Debra A., wife of the late Daniel Hornberger of Akron, James L, husband of Candice (Jogwer) Matthews of Canonsburg; three grandchildren, Rebecca Hornberger Brewster, Curtis, husband of Jessica (Shade) Matthews, Brian, husband of Lauren (Buck) Matthews; three great-grandchildren, Maddox Shade, Judith Brewster, Stella Shade and a sister, Mary Zimmerman of Florida.

In addition to his wife, and parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Irma Snader, Irene Burkholder and three brothers, Carl, Lester, and Earl Matthews.

Interment and services will be private at the convenience of the family in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
