Obituary for Garrett T. Cantwell

Garrett “Gary” Timothy Cantwell passed away peacefully on April 19, 2023 with his devoted wife of 48 years, Janice (Hiller), by his side. Born in Brooklyn, Gary spent most of his early life on Long Island before moving to the Philadelphia Area and raising his family. A graduate of St. Agnes Cathedral High School and Niagara University, Gary began his career on Wall St and spent the vast majority of his long and storied career in financial services.
A lifelong sports fan, Gary would often regale his boys with stories of the Brooklyn Dodgers or some of the many sporting legends he saw in person. Whether a mystery thriller or a tome about the Civil War, Gary was a voracious reader and could rarely be caught without a book nearby.
Gary was a devoted father and having passed his love of sports to his sons, he spent countless hours shuffling them to just about every sport possible. He was extremely close with each of his sons and as they moved out of the family home he spent many hours on the phone discussing the latest ball game, the markets, or the newest fact he learned about Ulysses S. Grant.
Gary was thrilled to become a grandfather and loved it when his oldest granddaughter renamed him “Pop.” His 6 grandchildren adored him for his affable loving nature and boundless love.
Gary is survived by his wife Janice, his three sons and their wives Eamon (Erin), Garrett (Carolle), and Philip (Wendy), six grandchildren Katie, Wyatt, Kieran, Elizabeth, Willow, and John, his sister Deborah (Jim) and brother Terry (Kathleen). He was pre-deceased by his parents Timothy and Marie (Walsh) Cantwell.
A funeral Mass will be held at St. Bernadette Church in Drexel Hill, PA on Friday April 28th at 11am. The family will receive friends prior to Mass beginning at 10:30.
