Obituary for Dorothy J. Sheaffer (Baringer)
Dorothy Jean Sheaffer, 92, of Ephrata, passed away on Monday, March 30, 2020, at Wellspan York Hospital.
She was born in Ephrata to the late Arlington D. and Bertha M. (Witmer) Baringer and was the wife of the late Ray Willier Sheaffer for 71 years before he passed away April 7, 2019.
Dorothy graduated from West Chester State Teachers College with a degree in Music, student teaching in Malvern. She was a lifetime member of the Eastern Star Cloister Chapter #406 O.E.S. and the Ephrata Women's Club. She was proud to complete her NAUI certification in Palm Beach, FL in 1977, along with her husband and daughter. Dorothy was an excellent cook, always trying new recipes and making exotic dishes. She played piano and clarinet and even sang in her husband’s band which he created with 7 to 10 other member’s after coming home from WWII. She had the voice of an angel. She also loved to read. She and Ray enjoyed traveling throughout the world and in the US and Canada in their 1977 Airstream (Argosy) Trailer.
Determined to start her family at a young age, she completed her bachelor’s degree in 2 years, getting married soon after on January 30, 1948, and having four children in five years. She was a devoted wife and mother.
Dorothy is survived by three children, Sylvia J. Sheaffer of Lancaster, Ray Wilbur, husband of Mary (Quinn) Sheaffer of Naples, FL, Stephen C. Sheaffer of North Palm Beach, FL; a grandson, Ray Daniel Sheaffer and a sister-in-law, Carol Ann Mather of Mount Gretna. She will be dearly missed by all of her family.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Daniel B. Sheaffer; a sister, Betty Mae Brunner and brother-in-law, Earl W. Brunner, Jr..
Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Interment will be private at Bergstrasse Lutheran Cemetery.
