Obituary for Betty Jane Alexander

Betty Jane Alexander, loving mother, grandma, and sister passed away at Maple Farm Nursing Center on October 25, 2023, at the age of 95.

She was born in Ephrata on April 9, 1928, to the late Arthur and Elsie (Yost) Fasnacht. She was the wife of George Alexander, who passed away in 1985.

Betty was a lifelong member of Salem Lutheran Church in Lincoln. She attended the Wood Corner School in Lincoln (Ephrata) and graduated from Cornwall High School, class of 1945. She worked a variety of jobs, including working as a supply clerk in Middletown during WWII. She also worked at the Lebanon Box Factory, Hershey Chocolate, Ephrata Market, and the Ephrata Acme. She spent most of her career as a sewing supervisor at Walter W. Moyer in Ephrata.

Family always came first; she enjoyed feeding and spoiling everyone. You never left her house without a Tupperware container of goodness and a bag of candy. She considered ice cream a breakfast food for her great-grandchildren, reminding their moms it was dairy! She liked traveling with her husband, kids, and friends and just plain old running around. She was known for her heavy foot and got her first speeding ticket in her 70’s. She loved to read, go to yard sales, put puzzles together and babysitting for grands and great-grands. You couldn’t get her to leave the TV when football or baseball were on, and she and her cousin Ella Mae Pannebecker made yearly pilgrimages to Williamsport “to see the kids play”. She worked well into her 70’s, had boundless energy, a force to be reckoned with. She was the sweetest person you ever met, and she was loved by all!

Betty is survived by a daughter Carla (Susie), wife of Frank Gerhart of Dushore; a son Michael, husband of Becky Weber of Ephrata; four granddaughters, Kelly Gerhart, Jamie, wife of Keith Gerhart, Becky, wife of Troy Steffy, Tracy, wife of Paul Krieg; 10 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; one great-great-great grandchild; a sister, Fern Steininger and a brother Elwood Fasnacht.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Goldie Gibble; two brothers, Robert Fasnacht, Jerry Fasnacht; two great-grandsons and 1 great-granddaughter.

The family would like to thank the staff of Maple Farm for loving Betty as much as her family did for these past three years. You are all amazing. A shout out and thank you to Hospice and Community Care for walking beside Betty and supporting her through her journey.
