Obituary for Alverta S. Hummer

Alverta “Vertie” S. Hummer passed away at age 101 on Monday, October 30, 2023, in her residence at Keystone Villa at Ephrata. 

The daughter of the late Mamie and Raymond Summy, she was the wife of the late J. Henry Hummer who died in 1999. They were married for 56 years.

She was a member of the first United Methodist Church of Ephrata. Vertie was a 1940 graduate of East Hempfield High School and worked at Armstrong Laboratory for several years and later as a bookkeeper for her husband’s building business. An avid golfer, she was a member of Lebanon Country Club for over 40 years, where she won the women’s club championship in 1971. She also played tennis and was a member of the Old Hickory Racquet Club for many years. Vertie was a Girl Scout leader and also served with the auxiliaries of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Other interests included traveling, playing cards, and doing crossword puzzles.

She is survived by her daughters Julia Wettach and Cindia, wife of Jeffrey Rutt, both of Ephrata; three grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and a nephew.
Vertie was preceded in death by her siblings, Naomi, Emory, Erma, and Raymond and a grandson.

The family would like to thank the staff at Keystone Villa for taking care of our mom and Nanny the last several years, and First United Methodist Church of Ephrata for its cards of support.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.
