Obituary for Galen J. Weidman

Galen J. Weidman
Galen J. Weidman, 89, of Ephrata, passed away on Wednesday, January 17, 2018, at home.

He was born in Reinholds to the late John and Eva (Mohler) Weidman and was the husband of Lillian (Huber) Weidman with whom he shared 63 years of marriage.

Galen was a 1946 graduate of Ephrata High School. “Galie” earned a BA degree from Moravian College, class of 1950 and a Master’s degree in Educational Administration from Temple University in 1956. Galen served in the Army from January 1951 to December 1952. After his military service, Galen was a teacher and high school football coach at Ephrata, Cocalico, and Manheim Central. In 1956, he coached Ephrata to its only undefeated season (10-0) and in 1958 coached Cocalico to a 10-0 undefeated season. In the 1960’s he taught and coached at Manheim Central where he established a winning football program. In 1969 until 1980 Galen was principal at Manheim Central Junior High School. After retiring from education, Galen obtained his real estate brokers license and worked at Haunstein Real Estate Agency.
Just as important as his winning record and successful career are the life values he instilled in his players, students and children. Galie enjoyed family gatherings, playing golf, working with his hands, traveling and participating in lively family discussions. Galen was a member of the American Legion, Ephrata Elks, the VFW and a former member of the Amvets and the War Memorial Association.

In addition to his wife, Galen is survived by 4 children, Deb, wife of Randy Auker of Denver, Gail Weidman of Harrisburg, Timothy, husband of Joy Weidman of McKinleyville, CA, Michael, husband of Lisa Weidman of Ephrata; 8 grandchildren, Hilary and Katrina Auker, Courtney, wife of Josh Armour, Morgan Jones, Mira, Matthew, Nathan and Anna Weidman; a great-grandson, Bradley; a brother, Raymond Weidman and a sister, Elizabeth, wife of Howard Haws.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, E. Paul Weidman.

A viewing will be held on Monday, January 22, 2018, from 10 to 11 AM at Bethany UCC, 140 E. Main Street, Ephrata, followed by funeral services at 11:00 AM, with Reverend Bob Shrom officiating. Interment will take place in the Mohler's Brethren Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Red Rose Veteran Honor Guard and the 21 Vet Salute.

Memorial contributions in Galen's memory may be made to American Cancer Society-Lanc. Co., Unit 314 Good Drive, Lancaster, PA, 17603 or Wounded Warrior Project, 301 Grant St., Suite 900, Pittsburgh, PA, 15219.
