Obituary for Betty R. Stauffer

Betty R. Stauffer
Betty Lorae Root Stauffer, 91, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, September 15, 2017 at Keystone Villa in Ephrata.

Born in Ephrata on October 24, 1925, she was the wife of Robert K. “Bob” Stauffer. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on April 5, 2017 at Keystone Villa. She was the daughter of the late James S. Root and Anna Mae Leisey Root.

Betty graduated from Ephrata High School, class of 1943 and worked as a bookkeeper for Penn Dairies and later transferred those skills to the family businesses of Earl Y. Stauffer and Sons and Twin Brook Mobile Home Park. But her first priority was being a loving wife and mother. Caring for her family was of utmost importance and her legacy of love has continued over the generations.

She enjoyed playing pinochle and bridge in card clubs and was an even more avid pinochle player with her children and grandchildren. She took pleasure in the creativity of being a seamstress and made many outfits for the family including "original" Barbie clothing. She always had an "open door" and whenever family visited, she made sure no one ever left empty-handed or hungry. Over the years, she also enjoyed bowling, golf, tennis and billiards whether in Pennsylvania or while being a snow-bird visiting family in Englewood, FL for 21 of their retirement years.

In addition to her husband, Bob, she is survived by a son, William, husband of Lois (Bingeman) Stauffer of Whitehall, PA, 2 daughters, Barbara, wife of Dr. Richard Gelder, Osprey, FL, and Bonnie Richardson, Ephrata; 7 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 5 step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Paul Root and 2 sisters, Marie Dart and Brenda Lanni.

Betty was predeceased by her parents, a son, Larry, 4 brothers, Ralph, James, Robert “Bobby” and Richard “Dick” Root and a sister, Thelma Groff.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life Memorial Service on Saturday, September 23, 2017, at 1:30 pm at the Home Towne Square Clubhouse, 577 Constitution Drive, Ephrata, PA 17522. Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family.

The family would like to thank the staff at Keystone Villa, Senior Helpers, and Hospice and Community Care, for all their tremendous loving care, comfort, and support.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Hospice and Community Care, P.O. Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125.
